His father, a farmer, came to Canada in 1884 from Scotland. This mother came to Canada in 1889.
He was born on 19 December 1897 and had two brothers, Arthur and Harold, and two sisters Gertrude and Grace. The family were Scottish Presbyterians

Admitted to St Luke's hospital on 4 January 1916 suffering from meningitis, he died due to acute general septicaemia. Meningitis is the inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord.
Septicaemia is the blood poisoning form of the disease.
